Adelpha californica

California Sister

The California sister is always a nice butterfly to see in the mountains where its favored larval food plants are found: the oaks Quercus chrysolepis (canyon live oak) and Q. cornelius-mulleri (desert scrub oak). The round-ish orange patches at the wing tips distinguish this butterfly from all but Lorquin's admiral. But the latter's orange tip goes to the edge of the wing and is not as rounded as with this species.
